Life Education

Today we went to see Harold, in the life educational caravan. First we got into partners, then Mrs Smith couldn't open the caravan door so Jo had to open the door for us! We were learning about our brain, heart, lungs and things like that. We were working on the brainy bunch. We talked about stress. And we saw TAM and her body parts light up. Then we watched a couple of clips. The first clip was about a boy with a new bike and his friend wanted to do some jumps. The boy showed us three different ways of saying no. They were: Passive, Assertive and Aggressive. It was really fun there. We hope to go there again next year.

Tut Pup

In room 1, we have been learning to use tut pup this term. You can play maths, algebra and spelling. You can make your own login, for example Black seal 42 and Red bat 62, and you make your own password. We sometimes play against each other. Tut pup is really fun and everyone likes playing  it.
It's been  good having tut pup to do maths ,algebra and spelling for homework.

D2P Comic Lifes

While we were on our D2P trip, Mrs Smith took some photos. Then Mrs Smith put these photos on to the computer.

We used these photos to make a D2P comic on Comic Life. This is how we made them. First, we chose a template that we put the photos we wanted on to. Second, we typed the answer on one of the photos. Third, we put some speech bubbles on the page. Fourth, we put a title and our name on the page and saved it. Most of the class had to fix their one up.

The Netball Tournament

On Monday the 25th August, 2008, rooms 1 and 2 went  to a netball tournament
We played four games. It was 7 min and then it was half time in the game. Our netball  team was called primer 1 and another team was called mixed 1. Primer 1 played Kelson, Belmont & two
Maungaraki School teams.  The mixed 1 teams played Raphael House. We had a great time.

Olympic Games

NZ has won 9 medals - 1 silver, 5 bronze  and 3 golds - in  the  Olympic  Games this year.
Michael Phelps has won 8 gold medals. He broke the Olympic record of 7 gold medals. People have been protesting about the Olympics being in Beijing, China. I hope we can get enough money to hold the games in NZ.

D2P Trip

In week 2, rooms 9, 2 and 1 went on a D2P trip.
First we went into a hut and got orange vests and hard hats. In the hut, we saw lots of cool pictures. After that, we went to see how the water gets from Maungaraki Dam to the Petone Beach. Then we went back to the bus to drive to the bottom of Maungaraki Hill - some of us got really dirty like the mud trucks.
There were not very many workers working because it was raining and they need dry weather
to finish the structures off.
It was awesome watching the builders do different jobs around the D2P bridge.

Planting Trees

On Wednesday, Mrs Skencle taught Room1 about trees and plants.
Mrs Skencle said "My passion is planting". She gave us some trees to plant.
These are the trees she taught us about; pohutukawa, flax, kowhai and kiori trees.
The whole class planted their trees in different parts of the school .
I thought our gardens were the best with more plants!

Book Week Parade

Last term we had a book parade-and believe me there were a lot of different costumes.
Some of us were things like fairies and animals, while others were adventurists and heroes, like Indiana Jones and Spiderman.

The most popular character of all was... Harry Potter!

Along with Harry Potter there was a Neville and some other creatures.
My favourite characters were the little fairy tale creatures from rooms 4,5 and 6.
I thought everyone was so fantastic in their costumes-it looked pretty realistic.
It was as if the netball court had turned into a book itself with all the stories inside it.

Pukeko, Kakapo, Takahe and Morepork have been doing diferent stuff every day, like Kakapo went to room 9 first and there Miss Cooper read us a book called The Patchwork Quilt and we made secret books. Pukeko did The Tin Forest and we made a mural of the dim forest and the colourful forest. Takahe went to room 2 with Mr Leamy and read a book called When a Monster is Born and we recorded our voices on garage band and copied the book onto garage band. It was a funny book.
Morepork went to the library with Mrs Hicks and we read a book called Frog Belly Rat Bone and we did drama to fit with the story line. It was really fun in the end and we still have one more day to go.

Mona Minum and the Smell of the Sun.

In room 1 we were reading a book called Mona Minum and the smell of the sun. I thought it was cute, because Mona Minum saves the day and she saves the queen, which is her best friend. The book is written by Janet Frame. Mona Mium is one of the best ants in the colony ,Mona Mium is a house ant. She was going out for her first time. She is also one of the characters. In the middle there is a boy who catches them, then Mona comes and saves the day. Most of the young ants like Mona Minum. It was very cool and I learnt more about ants.-Victoria
It was really really really really really good.-Lillin
I thought it was sad and funny and nice.-Emily
I thought it was ok.-Jack

Back to Before

A few weeks ago, we had people peforming a show called Back to Before. As we headed into the hall, we got a warm wecome from the actors. It took along time for everyone to get settle in. Then the show started with a boy named Sam. After school Sam went to Mrs Mc Tock's house. Sam was not sure about going to Mrs Mc Tock's house. Mrs Mc Tock was crazy to Sam at the start. As he went into Mrs Mc Tock's house, Mrs Mc Tock started to be crazy.Mrs Mc Tock, asked Sam to help her find the hour glass. Sam found the hour glass he picked it up, upside-down, and the time-keeper appeared. He told Sam, "If you don't guess all of the questions right, you will stay in here forever! Then a girl named Katie told Sam that she had been trapped in the time-keepers game. Sam told her that he had just seen the time-keeper."Hey, Katie, how long have you been in here?" Asked Sam
" A very long time, but I just don't know how long."Replied Katie.
Then they kissed, and said goodbye.
Then Sam said,"If you need help, call cooe cooe."
In ten minutes, Sam heard a ,"COOEE COOEE."and then realised it was Mrs Mc Tock.
All of us had a great time at the show.

Remember

Kia Ora Class.
Homework Term 2 Week 9
Remember that your homework for this week is to publish a piece of writing. You may like to do this using a computer. If you do, here are some tips...
1 - put your name in the header, right aligned, size 10 font
2 - centre align title, capital letters for all important words, large font size
3 - left align main body of text, size 12 - 16 font, select an easy to read font (times, comic sans, ariel)
4 - leave a space between paragraphs
5 - edit for meaning and punctuation
6 - use the spellcheck
7 - try to talk the best typist in your life into typing some of the story for you (but you have to be there to make sure it's done right)
If you are publishing by hand, the same ideas apply - just use your very best handwriting.
Blog Challenge 2
Remember to take your digital camera out and about with you over the holidays so you can do Blog Challenge 2. If you don't have a digital camera - get creative and sketch the bridges you find. Check it out below.

Then we sang a song called "En la finca de papa" (old McDonld had a farm. Then we did a cross-word with Spanish numbers. We hope you come back soon and thank you for reading our blog.

Crumbs & Fried Worms

Through out the year, our teacher has chosen books for her to read to us. Two of our favourite books were Crumbs and How to Eat Fried Worms.
Crumbs was about a boy called Pete and a girl called Maggie and their mum kept buying Bonza's Baby Biscuits for Maggie, which made Maggie get smart and talk, even though she was too young to talk. But in the end it was a trick by the people who made the biscuits. But in the end they sorted it out and there were no more Bonza's Baby Biscuits for baby Maggie. I liked the part when the baby could not eat any more and I liked the part when the baby talks.

Fried worms was about two boys and one boy bet the other boy $50 to eat 15 worms!!! So once a day he ate a worm. He did that for fifteen days!!! Oww!! I liked the part when the boy ate the last worm and got the $50. The stories that Mrs Smith has read to us have been awesome, I always look forward to the next one.

Book Week

Next week the whole school is involved in Book Week. Students will work with their house groups and will go to a different teacher each afternoon (Monday - Thursday) to enjoy a picture book and a related fun activity.

The culmination of our Book Week will be the book character dress up parade at 10am on Friday morning. Start planning your outfit now! You don't need to buy or hire costumes, but you do need to include some clues as to who you are as part of your outfit.

In room 1 we are going to have a competition to see if we can guess who everyone is dressed up as. So don't tell everyone who you're going to be, make them guess on the day. There will even be a small prize for the best dressed. Whanau are welcome to join us for this, we'd love to have you along.

Maths

In maths we are learning to use halves and doubles in quick 10s and 5 questions. At the moment some of us are working on using our 5 times tables in hard questions. At the moment most of us are still working out of the basic facts maths book and few of us are working out of number sense and algebraic thinking. Every Tuesday, we all get put into groups and one group gets to go with Mrs Austin to learn our times-tables and division at the library. The groups that we have been put into are advanced counting and advanced additive. In 100 square the teacher times us to see how fast we can go and our challenge is to get whole 100 square finished in 5 minutes, if we don't we have to change into a different colour pen and put down our time as 5 minutes+, but if we make it we get to full in the answer's on the whiteboard. If we get it wrong, we write the correct answer in red pen rather than crossing it out and making a big mess. Sometimes if we get all the answers correct we get group points for our group. Our favourite game is add-ups and alien addition because the whole class can understand the games and understand the questions really well, even if the questions are hard or easy. Our most favourite game is add ups because we can improve our maths and go up a level in maths. Some of the kids really like playing Alien addition because the question's are very interesting, and some are easy and some are really hard. A lot of us really need to focus on our division and our seven times table.
Lots of kids like using their 5 times tables. All of the kids in Room 1 are working on their 7 times tables because we are all on that level. We all like learning about add-ups because it is all about adding numbers up and how numbers work. Lots of kids in Room 1 really like doing 100 squares.

Blog Challenge 2

This challenge relates to our D2P topic.
How well do you know bridges? How well do you know Hutt City? Wellington? The Lower North Island? Over the next month.... (yep, it may take a while) take your digital camera out and about with you. Take a photo some different bridges you pass over or under. Bring your bridge pics to school or e-mail them to ksmith@maungaraki.school.nz. Let's see how many others in the class recognise the bridges you snap.

Make sure you write down the name of each bridge, and where it is. We will also identify the type of bridge it is, so have a think about that too.

New classroom

Last term rooms 1, 2 and 3 were done up. There was new carpet and new covering on the walls. Now in the morning the classroom is hot but by the afternoon it is cold. The colours of the class are blue and white. The cool thing is, we have 3 computers and a large area to play on wet days. Our classroom is cool. There are lots of gadgets, like shelves and coat-hangers and cool lights. In the classroom there is also a big white board. It's realy cool and fun in our new classroom. By Harrison

Skool Stars

In term 2 Skool Stars came to our school. Every class had a different song. Our class did Blame it on the Boogie by the Jackson 5. We practiced our singing with Mrs Coyle. Then we made up moves. It was hard remembering all the moves and words. Next we got put into 3 groups. Each group had to dance to a different part of the song. Every day we practiced singing and dancing. Group 3 had to work on timing for their solo parts. When rooms 2 and 3 were out we went into their classrooms and used the stage and music to practice. In week 5 Skool Stars came to record our singing and film our dancing. We squeezed in lots of practice before filming. Each group went up and danced in front of a big green screen. We were nervous. If we wore green we would not show up in the final copy. We could still dress up. Some people wore afro wigs. It was lots of fun.

Myanmar's cyclone.

Myanmar had a cyclone, room 1 wants to help. First we discussed what World Vison could do, then discussed what we could do.
World Vison got the BIG jobs like; clean all the corpses [dead people] out of the rivers and build new bridges, etc. Mrs Jennings
knows a lady whose husband is in Myanmar building a STRONG school! Well done to him! Maybe he helped make our class who
knows?! we have no idea!!and us? well WE decided that we could give LOT'S and LOT'S of MONEY! in that way we can help them!
WE NEED YOU! PLEASE HELP! just think you are pretty rich so be a little more helpful....save a live I would give ya a medal if I
knew ya.

We get to do the activities first like flutter boards, pajama race and other things.
Now all about the fun stuff. We can do any thing we want sometimes and we can play on the air balloons. That is all for now.

How You Start A Sailling Race

My mum works in the start box for Lowry Bay Yacht Club. This is how you start a sailing race. First you put up the class flag, to say what division is starting. Then the blue peter goes up one minute later. Two minuets later, the blue peter goes down and one minute after that, the class flag goes down too. If any boats go over the line before the hoot, she has to do an extra hoot, if lots of boats go over she has to start the race again.

This is the year 4 route. Start at room 1, run towards the weather station, run in front of the weather station, run in behind one of the rugby posts, run behind the brick wall, run behind the playground, run across the crossing, run up the driveway to the car park, run through the car park, run behind Bob's shed and rooms 6, 7, 8 and 9, run in behind rooms 4 and 5 and the pe shed, then do the same thing until you reach the crossing, then run back to the start. Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 did same, but they ran down Barberry Grove. It was great fun.

Farewell to Keiko & Kohei

On the second of April room 1 had a fare well lunch
for Keiko and Kohei.

Before the lunch we had a class photo with Keiko and Kohei. Mrs Smith put us into groups of five and we all got to do our jobs.

After that Anishka said a little good bye speech, to thank Keiko and Kohei and presented a farewell card that she'd made and we'd all signed. Keiko tought us a Japaneese prayer before we ate.

Everyone had a lovely time, we all knew that Kohei's
favourite was the chocolate cake with whipped cream!

Learning Japanese

In the past weeks Kohei and Mrs Tuji have been teaching us Japanese.

In the first week, we learnt a game called Jan Kin, in New Zealand we call it Paper, Scissors, Rock.
We learnt about the Doll Festival which was on March 3. In the second week we learnt about origami and chop-sticks. In the third week we learnt about and we played sumo wrestling and wrote our names in Japanese with ink and a brush. The ink smelt like coral and dead fish. This work was called calligraphy. On the secound to last lesson we dressed up in Yukatas and looked at Japanese moeny, which is called Yen. On the last week we played with Japanese toys like blow up balloons, hacky sacks, helicopters and spinning tops. Everybody liked having Kohe here and he has been a good friend. It has been fun having Kohe to play with at lunch and morning tea. Good-bye Kohei and Mrs Tsuji.

Hats Off to Room 1 Milliners

In the first part of this term Room 1 made hats. These were
paraded in a mini hat fashion show at assembly. The learning
involved in making and showing off these hats was considerable....
firstly, in making the hats, children worked through a design process. They had to use their imagination, creativity and problem solving skills to actually turn their ideas into a wearable hat (hats off to all the parents that gave a hand here).
When it came time to prepare for the hat parade in assembly children had to write a short commentary and also make an invitation. These writing tasks provided the class with genuine contexts to construct two very different pieces of text. The class discussed the specific purpose of each and considered the needs of the audience for each piece of writing - a lot of thought went in to what to say, as well as how to say it.
The actual parade came after some very intense rehearsals. I was very proud of the students for the way they read aloud the commentary of a classmate. We all know how nerve-wracking it can be to speak in front of a large audience! Yet everyone spoke clearly and with good expression into the microphone. (This experience was great preparation for delivering speeches later in the year.) Cat walk modeling styles varied, reflecting not just the personalities of the hat-makers, but also the hats. Dancing hats
danced, frog hats jumped, scary hats stalked and a hat inspired by Star Wars moved in a Star Wars kind of way. It was very clear that the children had put a lot of thought into what they were doing. Well done to the class for their superb efforts.
Thank-you to all the parents who came to the assembly - you were a patient and appreciative audience. Your presence made the hat parade a special event for the whole class.

Yummy Morning Tea Muffins

Thanks Mallory for bringing in those yummy muffins for the staff to eat at morning tea. The chocolate ones were my favourites.
A few weeks back Kayleigh made some valentine biscuits and shared them with the whole class. They were yummy too.
Matthew C makes tea for his family every Friday night. I wonder how many other room 1 students are helping out in the kitchen at home? We are currently working on our measurement unit in class. All the kitchen activity at home will be making a real difference for students learning the relationships between grams and kilo-grams, millilitres and litres and how to measure accurately. So well done Mums & Dads for being involved in your children's learning - keep up the good work.

Bike Day

Hi Everyone
We had a great time on Friday afternoon riding bikes around the field. Students firstly participated in the slow race. This is much harder than it sounds and quite a few children had to put a foot down well before they had reached the finish line.
We followed this up with some circuits around the perimeter of the field, practicing turning and stopping signals. In the high winds that were blowing on the day, this was quite a tiring event. Students were able to rest up while they waited their turn through the slalom course. By cycling slowly with full control, all children were able to 'shimmy' through successfully. We finished up with a 'figure 8' exercise that required students to look left and give way to others if they needed to.
There were heaps of prizes handed out for all manner of behaviours - most went for good cycling.
Well done everyone! Great cycling!

Parents.... do bring your children down to school at the weekend to practice their safe cycling skills 'off road'.
